Pickleball’s 14-year-old phenom Anna Leigh Waters picked up another impressive double victory on Championship Sunday taking Gold in the Pro Women’s Doubles and Pro Women’s Singles divisions making her the youngest player in history to win at Nationals. Anna Leigh also won a Bronze medal in Pro Mixed Doubles to top off the week.

Anna Leigh Waters and Leigh Waters took a straight-set victory to become back-to-back Gold medalists in the Pro Women’s Doubles division. This power mother-daughter duo shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon and will surely be back looking for the three-peat in 2022.

NML Pickleball Rankings 2.0 – Singles

It’s been a hot minute since we have done any rankings but the people have been asking for them! After promising new rankings for a while, we are here to deliver. Over 6 months of tournaments have elapsed since our last installment of rankings and it really is fascinating to see how much has changed in that period of time, which is keeping in the spirit of the rapid evolution of pickleball. We’re splitting up our rankings into three parts just like last time- singles, mixed doubles and doubles. We have singles today, mixed doubles will be posted tomorrow and we’ll start off your Monday next week with the doubles rankings – that is what people in the business call a tease folks. So here it is, the second installment of the definitive NML PIckleball player rankings.

Top 5 Women

1. Anna Leigh Waters – The last time we did player rankings, we asked the question, why doesn’t Anna Leigh play more singles? This was after the US Open, where she had taken bronze in singles, but it was her first time playing singles this year. Since then she has competed in singles in every tournament she has played in. In her last 7 tournaments, Anna Leigh has come away with 5 gold medals and 2 silver medals, so it is safe to say she has found her stride in singles. Her rolling shots tend to keep opponents on their heels, and her great court coverage allows her to keep a lot of balls in play, forcing opponents to hit more shots than they would like to. When returning serve, I think she needs to continue to work on coming to the net consistently and forcing opponents to make difficult passing shots. #1 or not, always things to improve. (Read More)

2021 PPA Masters - Meet Anna Leigh Waters: The 14-year-old pickleball pro is taking the sport by storm

Anna Leigh Waters has established herself as one of the top female pickleball players in the world. 

She is currently ranked No. 3 in singles and No. 4 in doubles and has sponsors and prize money rolling in. 

The fact that she's only 14 hardly comes up anymore. 

"I don't think they think of me as 14 anymore," Waters said as she prepared to begin play at the season-ending Pro Pickleball Association Masters event in La Quinta on Thursday. "When I first played pro as a 12-year-old, I think people were like 'Wow, she's pretty young,' but now I think they think of me as just another player like them. They don't care how old I am, they just really want to beat me." 

Pickleball's young gun has won three singles tournaments in 2021. In the world of pickleball, she's already a household name. 

"It's pretty amazing and a little weird to go places and get recognized on the street or something," said Waters, who lives in Delray Beach, Fla. "But I really enjoy getting to travel around the country and play a pro sport where my family can travel with me. I'm making memories and having experiences that I would never have without pickleball, and it's just a really exciting time for me right now." Read More
