Thank you everyone for thinking of me. I’ve had to withdraw from playing with AL today. In the next few days I’ll have a better idea of how long the road to recovery will be. Yesterday was tough-really tough. But the love I have received from all of you and fellow players has been amazing. Thank you 🙏

Anna Leigh Waters Claims First Triple Crown at PPA Riverland Open

The Pickler March 2022

In her own words, Leigh Waters recaps her latest pro pickleball tournament - the PPA Riverland Open - with her daughter and pro women's doubles partner, Anna Leigh Waters...

To say it was windy is an understatement. The PPA Riverland Open in Port St. Lucie, Florida saw some of the highest sustained winds, not to mention gusts, that I personally have ever played in. The pro women’s doubles bracket was placed on a wind delay just after our first round match. Before that first match started, Anna Leigh and I discussed our strategy. Honestly, we felt like the wind was as much our opponent as the women standing across the net. We had a two-pronged plan: (1) keep our feet moving and (2) keep our eyes on the ball.  In the wind especially, these two steps were vital for survival.

After our first round win, and after the wind delay, we decided to have a nice lunch and go back to the hotel and relax. We actually tried to think about anything but pickleball. I took a nap, and AL looked at TikTok and did some stretching and recovery work. We knew we had a tough semifinal against Simone Jardim and Lucy Kovalova that evening, but we didn’t want to overthink the matchup. (Read More

The Trichotomy of Pickleball with Anna Leigh Waters

By Leigh Waters

If you have been paying attention in the pickleball world lately, then you have certainly heard the names Leigh and Anna Leigh Waters. These are the names of the mother-daughter duo taking the pro pickleball scene by storm and the reigning National Champions.

With Anna Leigh (also known as "AL") at the ripe age of 14, she has already been dubbed as the "princess of pickleball" or "future of pickleball" - and the future has certainly arrived. On the pickleball court next to this teenage phenom - whether it is literally next to her in doubles play, on the sidelines as a cheerleader and coach, or sometimes, as her opponent - is her mother, Leigh Waters. This has to be some dynamic, as some pickleball players cannot even play with their spouse and keep it together.

So, what's it like for mother and pro pickleball player herself, Leigh Waters, to be on the pickleball court with Anna Leigh, challenging players for championships week in and week out? What about coaching her in her stellar pro women's singles runs every pickleball tournament? What about playing against her with money and bragging rights on the line? Hear from Leigh Waters herself about the "trichotomy of pickleball" with her daughter, Anna Leigh Waters...

And, for those like us, that had never head of a trichotomy (haha!) it is a "division into three categories"... playing with, playing against, and coaching the teenage phenom, Anna Leigh Waters!

The Trichotomy of Pickleball with Anna Leigh Waters
I experience pickleball with Anna Leigh in three different ways: (1) as her doubles partner, (2) as her singles coach, and (3) as her opponent in pro mixed doubles. Let me start by discussing the experience of being AL’s opponent, as I absolutely hate, hate, hate (can’t say it enough) to play against her.

Playing Against Anna Leigh Waters
AL is a very talented mixed doubles player. She can dink for days, she can handle the aggression of the men, and she doesn’t get intimidated easily, even when she plays against her mother. She is just as intense, aggressive, and fierce when she faces me as her opponent. I, on the other hand, clam up when I face AL on the other side of the pickleball net. And I don’t mean to at all! I have all intentions of beating her when we step on the pickleball court. But, time and time again, even if my partner and I have a large lead, something happens to me internally and I freeze up. It usually doesn’t end well for me, and I always end up feeling so bad for my mixed partner.

However, on a brighter note, I am really excited to watch her team up with a new partner next year, Ben Johns. I am personally going to play a little less pro mixed doubles brackets, so I can be on the sidelines for her matches, cheering her on!

Coaching Anna Leigh Waters
A new experience for me this year has been coaching AL in singles competitions. AL decided to start playing singles this year at the US Open Pickleball Championships in April 2021. She had not played singles in over a year and half, not even in practice, and she came out of the US Open with a bronze medal in pro women's singles. She decided then and there to take up singles on a regular basis.

AL and I have had to work together to really learn the singles pickleball strategy and how to expose her strengths during singles play. Singles pickleball, at times, is like a totally different game than doubles pickleball. Now, my job is to keep her positive, composed, and give her pieces of this pickleball strategy that we have worked on together throughout each match and against different opponents. I absolutely love this job and am really learning about AL and myself, as she competes in more and more pickleball tournaments. It has been so exciting for me to sit back on the sidelines and play a very small part in her success and growth in the sport of pickleball.

Playing With Anna Leigh Waters
Last, and my most favorite experience, is getting to play next to AL on the pickleball court in pro women’s doubles. First of all, she is so fun to play with. Her energy is high, she makes me laugh, she can pick me up if I’m down, and I love getting to see her make amazing shots from the best seat in the house - on the court next to her. We strategize together, encourage each other, and make memories I never dreamed possible for a mother and daughter. We have become Nationals Champions together, we’ve had some amazing wins, and we’ve weathered some bad losses. But, we have done it all together, and no one can take that away from us. Not ever. To speak in terms of cake (AL’s favorite), anything else that comes our way is icing.

Team Waters Ready to End 2021 with a Bang

The end of the year is synonymous with the word "busy." The holidays are looming and it just seems that there is always a rush to get everything done before the New Year rings in. Well, the professional pickleball tour is no different. The biggest, baddest, coolest pickleball tournaments and events are all coming up between now and December 2021. And, Anna Leigh and I (Leigh Waters), the mother-daughter duo making up Team Waters, are here for it! (Read More)

The Gold Medal Match was broadcast live on the Tennis Channel: Anna Leigh Waters vs Lea Jansen
Score: 11-6,11-3,11-4 (3 out of 5 Games) (Match Point) (Highlight Reel 13+mins)

3:56 pm EST (Gritty) – Anna Leigh gets the gold in women’s singles. The result is not unexpected but I would say the score is. She won in straights and Jansen wasn’t able to get more than 6 points off her in a game. I think these are clearly the 1 and 2 ladies singles players at this point. Expect a lot more battles between the two going forward.

PPA Orlando Cup Is a Dream Come True for Team Waters

They say Disney World is “where dreams come true.” Well, just miles away, during the inaugural PPA Orlando Cup at the USTA National Campus, our dreams certainly came true as Anna Leigh won gold in pro women’s singles, and Team Waters (me and Anna Leigh) won gold in pro women’s doubles. Both finals were covered by and aired on the Tennis Channel, and to say that the emotions were running high is an understatement.

Not only were emotions high, but the conditions during the PPA Orlando Cup were particularly extreme. There were multiple rain delays throughout the 4-day event, and the heat and humidity were off the charts.

As an aside, I don’t think I’ve ever sweated as much as I did in the pro women’s final. In fact, during the 2nd game of the best of 5 game final, I could really feel myself becoming sluggish and void of energy. My husband, Stephen, had to run to the car to get me Liquid IV, which I quickly drank during the break before the 3rd game, and then continued to drink another Liquid IV throughout the rest of the match. Luckily for me, the Liquid IVs revived me and enabled me to feel strong to grind out each point thereafter. (Read More)

Article Excerpt:

On the other side of the draw, the #2 seeds Jessie Irvine / Catherine Parenteau had an exciting quarterfinal against Sarah Ansboury / Jorja Johnson, beating them 11-7, 9-11, 11-5. This put Irvine / Parenteau in the other semifinal against Leigh Waters / Anna Leigh Waters – a team that has come roaring back to the top this year after taking 2020 off from professional play due to concerns about Covid-19. Despite Irvine’s / Parenteau’s momentum coming into the match, Team Waters took a hard-earned game one 12-10, then captured their spot in the final by taking the second game 11-3.

This match cemented our Championship Sunday teams, with Jardim / Kovalova and Waters / Waters facing-off as the third match of the afternoon on Tennis Channel’s network. The match was considered to be the best of the day, with both teams displaying their best pickleball and their determination to capture the title. The tightly contested first game set the tone when it fell to Waters / Waters 12-10, who appeared to be unstoppable.

However, Jardim / Kovalova fought back to take game two 9-11 and it was clear that Team Waters would have to scrap for every point if they wanted to get the better of the #1 women’s doubles team in the world. Games three and four were full of epic rallies and long, emotional points, but ultimately, both went to Waters / Waters 11-8, 11-7. This won them the match and the well-deserved Orlando Cup title. Leigh Waters shed tears of joy as she hugged her daughter in triumph after the final point. Although they had come close in the past, this was the first PPA doubles title that the mother-daughter duo had won together.

TEAM WATERS WINS ON & OFF THE PICKLEBALL COURT AT TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

 by Leigh Waters

We just deplaned the red eye from Salt Lake City, Utah to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after a week of competing in the USA Pickleball Tournament of Champions (called “TOC”). Needless to say, Anna Leigh and I (Leigh Waters) are tired both mentally and physically. But, our time in Brigham City, Utah, was well rewarded.

If you’ve never been there, Brigham City is a very small town about an hour north of Salt Lake City. It is the home of a large pickleball facility that sits at the base of a beautiful mountain range. The facility has two stadium courts and has added further exterior courts in the last year.

Anna Leigh and I have fond memories of TOC, as we were the 2019 pro women's doubles champions. It was our first major tournament win and, I believe, really gave us the confidence to then go on to win 2019 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships in Indian Wells, California. TOC is also often known as a tournament of upsets, and here is why: the conditions are not easy. Pickleball Fire Magazine March 2021

Leigh and Anna Leigh Waters are featured on the cover of Pickleball Fire magazine

Feature Article: Winning with Aggressive Pickleball

Leigh wrote an instructional article for the March issue entitled, "5 Tips For Attacking Dinks".

As you probably know by now, Anna Leigh and I are known for being aggressive and playing an attacking game. Attacking the dink is a big part of our aggressive strategy.
You don’t have to play like us or become a “banger” to incorporate the dink attack.
In fact, adding this type of attack to a finesse game will create that element of surprise and unpredictability that wins so many free points. Let’s look at some tips that will help you become successful in attaching dinks from your opponent. (Read More)
